Why we rate Ayutthaya 0/10

Ayutthaya is inland, so there are no sea beaches.

A long sandy beach is right beside the resort area, though crowds, boats and busy roads affect the beach experience.

What we assess

Beach appeal, convenient access and variety during a beach-focused stay, within the destination itself.

Why we rate Ayutthaya 4/10

Rivers and flat lowland surroundings give Ayutthaya a pleasant setting, but dramatic natural landscapes are not a main reason to visit.

Why we rate Patong 6/10

The bay and surrounding hills are attractive, but dense resort development dominates much of the view.

What we assess

The visual impact of natural surroundings and how central those landscapes are to a typical stay.

Why we rate Ayutthaya 10/10

Scores out of 10 · Higher means more of that characteristic About these scores

How to read the scale
Scores run from 0 to 10 and describe how strongly a destination offers each characteristic.

Higher does not always mean better
A higher nightlife score means a livelier scene. A higher quietness score means a calmer atmosphere. The right balance depends on your trip.

Close scores mean similar experiences
Small differences should not decide your trip on their own.

Ayutthaya

Choose Ayutthaya if...

  • You want to explore the temples and ruins of Thailand’s former capital.
  • You like days built around history, riverside sights and local neighbourhoods.
  • You want to try river prawns, local noodles and roti sai mai alongside the temple visits.

The trade-off

The main ruins are spread across the city, so plan a cycling route, tuk-tuk or tour rather than expecting to walk everywhere. Evenings offer a much smaller scene than a major city.

Patong

Choose Patong if...

  • You want late nights around Bangla Road, with plenty of bars and clubs to choose from.
  • You want the beach, restaurants and evening venues close together.
  • You prefer a lively resort base with a wide choice of food and easy access to taxis and tours.

The trade-off

Expect crowds and late-night noise near the centre. Choose accommodation carefully if quiet evenings matter, and allow for paid rides when exploring other parts of Phuket.

Temperatures are historical average daytime highs, not the highest temperatures you might experience. Rainfall and rainy days are monthly averages, not a forecast. A rainy day need not mean rain all day.

Stay prices are relative to each destination’s usual rates. Holidays can bring extra crowds and higher prices. Sea conditions vary by beach and day; check local conditions before boat trips.
